Board recognizes wrestlers
Woodridge Local Schools Board of Education

The Woodridge Board of Education met March 20 and recognized the Woodridge High School wrestling team for their accomplishments this season.
The team placed second overall in sectionals, and Andrew Scavuzzo finished in sixth place at the 160-pound level in Division III at the State Wrestling Tournament.
Wrestling coach Mike Massey commended all the team members. He said the team consisted of “great young men who represent Woodridge very well.” Massey added that plans have already begun for next year.
Superintendent Jeffrey Graham said it was nice to see such enthusiasm for the sport.
In other business, the board received a report from Curriculum Director Terri Sigler and Ed Roshong, director of student services, regarding the state program “District Value Added.” This program, which will be incorporated in the state district report card in 2008, is designed to track achievements of students in reading and math for one year. This is an achievement vs. progress-based agenda, according to Sigler, and an improvement could raise the school’s standing on the report card. There will be no extra testing for students, but Sigler and Roshong will be responsible for tracking its progress. The program only will affect primary and intermediate school students, but most likely will expand to all grades.
Graham then spoke to the board concerning the Getting It Right for Ohio’s Future proposed constitutional amendment. The amendment would determine levels of funding based on student need, including special education, vocational education, gifted or economically disadvantaged. For details on it, visit www.rightforohio.org.
Getting It Right for Ohio’s Future is asking for 2,000 signatures from the Woodridge district to place the amendment on the ballot by August. The board agreed to help with petitions. Graham added that this is a step in the right direction, since there will be provisions in this law to reduce the property tax burden of senior citizens and permanently disabled people.
In other business:
Chris Sieber was hired as assistant principal/athletic director at the high school with a three-year contract; Thomas Gabram was awarded a three-year contract as assistant principal at Woodridge Middle School; Teresa Noonan was hired to substitute in the After School Reading Intervention Program; and Mark Petrusky was hired as the high school assistant baseball coach.
The board agreed to participate in the Cooperative School Bus Purchasing Program to obtain an 84-passenger bus for the district. To enter into the cooperative, a fee of $650 is paid by the district. Then the firm takes care of the advertisement, bidding process and state requirements for the bus and will present it to the board for its approval, which will be in late April or early May.
The next board meeting will take place April 17 at 7 p.m. in the Woodridge High School library, 4440 Quick Road.
