DOWNTOWN AKRON — On Dec. 17, the Ohio Valley Chapter of the American Teleservices Association (ATA) held a holiday mixer event that doubled as a fund-raiser for the American Red Cross at The University of Akron’s Taylor Institute for Direct Marketing.

The event was held as part of the ATA’s Call Centers Care Initiative that encourages members to come together and make a difference in their communities, according to event officials.

Thanks to the event sponsors InfoCision, Stanley Staffing, NobelBiz, Virtual Hold Technology and Speedeon Data, admission, food and beverages were free for the more than 70 attendees, which included Toby Ann Weber, chief executive officer of the American Red Cross of Summit and Portage Counties, and former Ohio Attorney General Betty Montgomery, according to ATA chapter officials.

Each attendee was asked to bring new clothes items, which were given to the Red Cross to distribute at its monthly community dinners in Akron. Close to 200 clothing items were collected.

The event also featured a silent auction that included iPods, a Flip camcorder and a Cleveland Indians ticket package. Between the silent auction and sponsor contributions, about $2,500 in total was donated to the Red Cross, according to the ATA.

John Stanovcak, of WorldShoring and the president of the ATA’s Ohio Valley Chapter, also gave out awards to each of his board members for putting together a year of membership growth and well-attended events that has drawn praise from the ATA’s national office, according to chapter officials. John Kaplan, president of TeleDevelopment, entertained the crowd by performing a magic act. Attendees also were able to tour the Taylor Institute’s facilities.
