SASWMA encourages appliance recycling
SUMMIT COUNTY — The Summit/Akron Solid Waste Management Authority (SASWMA) encourages residents to recycle old appliances rather than placing them on the curb, which might send the items to a landfill.
According to SASWMA officials, appliance recycling is available at Summit County scrap yards like City Scrap and Salvage, 611 W. Wilbeth Road in South Akron, and Maxwell Recycling Station, 480 Fifth St., N.E. in Barberton.
In addition, pick-up service (for a fee) is available to remove, recycle and/or donate unwanted appliances from your home. Call Dick’ll Do It at 330-688-3773, Haulin N Such at 330-668-9942, Junk Away at 1-855-855-JUNK or Hairston Appliances, which also offers free Freon removal, at 330-434-6336.
Several communities, such as the cities of Akron, Barberton, Cuyahoga Falls and Green, offer appliance-recycling pick-up at the curb that is included in their waste disposal/recycling fees.
“Appliances and metals can be recycled year-round,” said SASWMA Executive Director Yolanda Walker. “Scrap yards are abundant in Summit County. Ensuring that appliances and other metals are in the hands of the scrap recycler reduces waste in landfills and provides materials for local recycling markets.”
